Number 8: 42 Castlehill Road, Ayr

Budget: To Clients Brief.
Design Brief:This substantial Victorian dwelling was recently purchased by the Client and is in need of repair and upgrading.
The brief was to transform the existing dwelling to provide a modern living environment complete with new TV Room, Kitchen/Dining Room, Cloaks Room, Laundry Room and a Guest Bedroom Suite. As the existing rear garden is a very attractive feature of the home the extension is to be designed to afford the best views into the garden.
Furthermore, the creation of a new dedicated entrance to the rear will make accessing the home easier for both the Client and guests as this will be linked directly to the new private parking area.
The current building has an attached outbuilding which is unsuited to alteration. This accommodates a small kitchen and a couple of stores. The proposed scheme therefore indicates these areas being demolished while at the same time the existing slate roof over is to be retained. As the new Kitchen/Dining Room had to be widened to maximise the new habitable space a traditionally clad lead flat roof extension is proposed to accommodate the increased floor area. Floor to ceiling glazing within sliding doors maximises the available daylight and creates a stunning contrast between the traditional Victorian main building and the new light and contemporary extension. These doors also afford uninterrupted views and access into the garden.
The Guest Bedroom suite also has outward opening French Doors which maximise daylight into the room and afford wonderful views of the garden.
Planning Approval for the project was secured within three weeks of lodgement with the local authority.
Works are due to commence on site in the autumn of 2009.
